What exactly am I looking at here?
Greetings!
If you’re reading this you’ve most likely come into possession of a solar powered mesh networking “node” made by hand by one of the many volunteer members of the MSPMesh.org community.
Important information about this device:
- It’s not in any way dangerous to be around, even at close distance. All it does is listen for and re-broadcast extremely low-powered radio signals on 906.875mhz — the same frequency that old cordless phones used to use. Remember those?
- It does not interfere with or interact at all with any existing radio-based services or products such as cell phone service, your home’s WiFi, services like Minneapolis wireless internet, GPS, or really anything else.
- It was created with care and installed where it originally was in order to help connectivity in the area it was found in for a publicly-available, free, text-only data network called Meshtastic. Think of it as text messaging, but it doesn’t require any cell phone signal or the internet in any way, even the the electricity grid for it to function.
- There is a large group of friendly, smart, helpful people that would love to introduce you to the DIY world of open-source mesh networking.
- The MSPmesh network can be used for many purposes such as:
- Outdoor activities like hiking, hunting, camping, etc where there is no cell service
- Emergency communications (such as power outages, internet outages, no or overloaded cell-tower signal)
- Real-time GPS tracking of pets, children, vehicles, etc.
- Public and encrypted private chat rooms
- Secure direct messaging from person to person
- If you found this device and would like to learn more, feel free to contact us via email – [email protected] – or join our very active and helpful Discord server at https://mspmesh.org/chat
We would love to have this device back, it was not cheap to create and required planning, coordination, and effort to install it. If you are comfortable contacting us via the methods mentioned above, you will be welcomed and appreciated!
Thank you very much!
